The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur) created the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geologic and Mining Systems, an interdisciplinary research center that will be funded over the next 5 years by Indian origin investor Vikram Sodhi, Managing Partner of Sun Valley Investments.
This initiative seeks to break current information silos by creating “native” AI systems for mining, utilizing the capabilities that Data Science and AI can offer. These new systems will be designed to unify the entire value chain into a single operational intelligence framework.
What distinguishes the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence for AI-Enabled Geologic and Mining Systems is its technical and methodological architecture:
- Unified Intelligence: The center integrates departments of geology, geophysics, mining engineering, metallurgical engineering, and data science, positioning itself as an integrated research platform.
- Validation with Real Data: Through the “Living Laboratory” program, systems are not trained with simulations but with real data from active mines in operation, guaranteeing practical and deployable field solutions, allowing information to flow without barriers from exploration stages to real-time ESG analytics.
- Creation of Institutional Value: Vikram Sodhi’s vision is to establish an institution whose technical excellence endures, serving as a bridge to integrate the geological context and talent of Colombian universities into this elite innovation ecosystem in the future.

This philanthropic donation from Vikram Sodhi seeks to leverage the expertise of a top-tier educational institution, the deep mining knowledge possessed by companies, and the human talent being trained and researching at the technological edge to positively transform the way mining is conducted worldwide.
